[UST vs ADMU WVB Game Round 2]
The first set was horrible. Ateneo kept firing on all fronts, and no amount of defense UST played could stop the Lady Eagles from eventually taking the set, 25-14. Yes, not the usual production from UST, and the fact that close to half of the 14 points the Tigresses scored were from ADMU’s errors was even more alarming.
See what I really love about these recent UST vs ADMU WVB games is the battle of the setters. Rhea and Jem are arguably just above everybody else, and these matches show us exactly that. And by this first set alone, Jem clearly was a lot better than Rhea in all aspects. And, of couse, as a UST-WVT fan — particularly a Rhea Dimaculangan fan — this really disappointed me. I wish Rhea had done more.
I guess the fact that there was Rhea Dimaculangan setting for the Tigresses it would be easy, almost automatic, to expect that UST’s offense would flow seamlessly. That her very presence in the court, what with the skills she brings and her nerves of steel, would guarantee fans that the Tigresses are in good hands, no pun intended. That she is expected to lead a team recently quitted by the greats Aiza Maizo and Angeli Tabaquero to perform plays and orchestrate UST’s production which would make it seem like these spikers never even left at all.
I remember UST’s head coach say this once earlier in the season: that in terms of spikers, UST has no one in particular who can deliver spectacularly. (Although this was mentioned before Maika Ortiz developed her killer slides, mind you.) I expected Rhea to make her spikers look better than they think they are, being the MVP-winning setter that she is.
Which is why, seeing her falling down in the second set, twisting her ankle, and being led out of the match, it made me feel really guilty for blaming her for playing a not-so-terrific first set in today’s game. That was heartbreaking. It seemed like a very bad fall; surely she was out of the game, but was it just for that game? Immediately I expected the Lady Eagles would take advantage of this and win the game altogether: from their first set performance alone they seemed like they were going to, with or without Rhea in UST’s line-up. But no, the Tigresses regrouped, even if it took them settling for Rhea’s understudy, Loren Lantin (amazing game!), to do the setting chores. Soon enough UST won the second set, and the third… and the fourth; thus, the game.
Although UST didn’t seem a bit disturbed by their captain’s absence, it was still a different UST team playing the Lady Eagles. Probably not a better team per se, but at least a team that could beat their current opponent. The thought of this team that beat the Lady Eagles (the team sans Rhea) going on to play against the other teams this second round, is pretty frightening. For sure the Tigresses will need their captain soon. And hopefully they get just that.
Get well soon, Rhea! :)
